The place I come from-- I'm not unused to situations being unkind, or to the idea that behaving in certain ways will just get you killed.
They'd have both died at some point. If not this-- someone who chose to act would target them over others they liked better. It's just happened this way instead.
In a situation like this, it's- unfortunately a pragmatic way to look at it.

But to tell you the truth, neither am I. Given what we heard about him-- if he'd do such a thing somewhere killing wasn't necessary, then what would he do with higher stakes? And that little stunt was... distasteful.
